ORAL SEDATION

oral sedation main

This method creates a deeper level of sedation than nitrous oxide. Our doctors will prescribe a medication for you to take before your appointment to reduce anxiety. A wide variety of medications are available for this type of sedation, and our doctors will carefully discuss your individual needs to determine which choice works best for you. All these medications are classified as anti-anxiety medications and achieve the same result: reducing and even eliminating the anxiety of dental treatment.

In addition to making your experience more comfortable, oral sedative medications help reduce your memory of the experience. It allows us to complete your treatment in less time and with fewer appointments. While your treatment is performed, our doctors carefully monitor your vital signs to ensure your experience is as safe as possible.

Another advantage of this type of sedation is that it can safely be used along with laughing gas for an even deeper feeling of relaxation. Because the effects of oral sedation last longer than with laughing gas alone, you will need someone to bring you to your appointment and drive you home after.

‘‘Had a great experience with everyone I interacted with. I appreciated the precautions everyone took to make health and safety a priority given the current circumstances, and everyone was very friendly!’’

Laughing gas is a type of sedative administered via inhalation that helps relax patients by relieving anxiety in short-term situations. It is often used in dentistry because it has fewer side effects than oral sedatives, making it a safer option for young children and patients with underlying medical conditions.
Oral sedatives are safe and easy to administer. Oral sedation requires no needles like intravenous sedation methods but provides a much more potent effect than sedation with nitrous oxide (laughing gas).
Oral sedation will make you feel drowsy, but undisturbed. You will be awake and still able to communicate, but if you are to doze off you will be able to easily awaken. Most often, patients who have had oral sedation do not remember much of the procedure.
Potential side effects of sedation, although there are fewer than with general anesthesia, include headache, nausea, and drowsiness. These side effects usually go away quickly. Because levels of sedation vary, it’s important to be monitored during surgery to make sure you don’t experience complications.
